They're likely married, stopped their education after high school, and are making up a bigger share of the population in states like Maine and Florida. Even when they've been married once, women are still more likely than men to hold no retirement savings. Per Gallup, the average retirement age in the US has been rising. Similarly, Americans' "target" retirement age increased from 60 in 1995 to 66 in 2022. The "full" retirement age to receive maximum Social Security benefits is 67 for those born after 1960.

Maine Republican Primary Election Results

Polls close in Maine’s presidential primary at 8 p.m. Eastern time. Party members could only vote in their own party’s primary, but unaffiliated voters could choose one to participate in. In many elections, including the presidential primaries, Maine uses a “ranked-choice voting” process in which voters may rank candidates in order of preference. Maine Republican leaders have said they will only consider the first round of voting when allocating their delegates. The state primary, which will include races for state and congressional offices, will be held on June 11.

Opinion What Sourdough Taught Me, in the Pandemic and BeyondInside one tablespoon of active sourdough starter, the fermented culture made of flour and water used for thousands of years to leaven bread, there are billions of microorganisms. How to create a sourdough starter Repeat until bubbling with life. Add flour, water and salt. Add flour, water and salt. To avoid this exponential growth, a portion of sourdough starter is traditionally discarded at every feeding, which means there’s plenty to go around.

Three Big Legal Questions
  + stars: | 2024-02-09 | by ( David Leonhardt | Ian Prasad Philbrick | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In a two-hour oral argument at the Supreme Court yesterday, nearly all justices appeared skeptical of Colorado’s effort to keep Trump off the ballot. Maine has also moved to bar Trump, and other states would likely follow if the Supreme Court were to allow it. The legal issues are complex, and we walk through them below. As Adam Liptak, who covers the Supreme Court for The Times, told us yesterday:Donald Trump is accused of doing grave wrongs in trying to overturn the election. Many legal experts expect the court to rule quickly (as this story explains) and to issue a broad decision that applies to all states.

Long viewed as an intriguing, if somewhat wonky, approach to conducting elections, ranked-choice voting — allowing voters to list candidates in order of preference instead of selecting just one — appears to be having a moment. Across the country, voters have adopted the system for municipal and county elections in each of the last 27 times the issue has been put to them. Nevada and Oregon — and perhaps Colorado and Idaho as well — will hold referendums on adopting the system this fall. Critics call the system confusing and even undemocratic, since candidates who initially get the most first-place votes don’t always win in the end. But just how popular ranked-choice voting is may depend on the group that has most often waged tooth-and-claw battles against it: conservatives, and in particular Republican political figures, who have ideological and practical reasons to oppose the system.

CNN —Critical days are ahead in Donald Trump’s multiple legal battles. — On Thursday, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments over a decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to throw Trump off the ballot under the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists. Maine has taken a similar step to Colorado but that case hasn’t yet reached the US Supreme Court. Nikki Haley, is now arguing that Trump’s legal entanglements make him a disastrous pick for her party by seizing on the news that he spent more than $50 million from political action committees on legal fees. So, definitely a good day for President Trump, but not necessarily out of the woods,” Goodman said.

Swatting Is a Political Problem - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( Barbara Mcquade | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
In a year with so much political and legal tension, law enforcement is seeing a disturbing trend: targeting public officials with swatting, or false emergency calls intended to draw a heavily armed police response. Recent incidents involving officials who have taken stands seen as hostile to Donald Trump and bomb threats in multiple state capitols are signs of a troubling escalation in political violence. In addition, swatting diverts law enforcement resources from real emergencies. But more insidiously, these tactics are tools of intimidation, designed to silence voices in the political process. The frequency and visibility of these incidents suggest that swatting and political violence require prosecutors to prioritize their efforts to stop it.

Lewiston, Maine CNN —The signs were there: hearing voices, expressing paranoid thoughts and making threats so violent, extra patrols were sent to guard a military installation. Instead, law enforcement relied on the gunman’s family to keep guns from him after they tried without success to talk to the reservist. Sheriff Joel Merry told CNN on Saturday law enforcement officers weren’t able to make contact with Card during two visits. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies saying they were trying to locate Card. The fact law enforcement in Maine didn’t utilize the yellow flag law in Card’s case could point to its shortcomings, Rocque said.

Interest rates for long-term borrowing for capital improvements also would be less costly for Pine Tree Power. The anger and frustration from electric ratepayers in Maine is a far cry from the days when Iberdrola bought Central Maine Power, the state’s largest electric utility. The privately operated, nonprofit Pine Tree Power utility would contract with a private grid operator through a competitive bidding process. But Pine Tree Power would face some of the same constraints as CMP and Versant. And, like the existing utilities, Pine Tree Power would have no control over the actual cost of electricity, which comprises about half of consumers' monthly bills.

But hours later, after repeated announcements and a search, authorities moved off — and it was still unclear whether Card had ever been at the location, state police said. Richard Goddard, who lives on the road where the search took place, knows the Card family. The evening shootings killed 18 people and wounded 13 others, with three people still hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. Schools in Lewiston were to remain closed Friday, while those in Portland would decide in the morning whether to open. Ten more will likely be issued once the names of the rest of the dead are confirmed, said Maine State Police Col. William Ross.
